Trek Canon Report

According to TrekToday, the Viacom split "has left the television franchise with CBS Corp. while Paramount Pictures and its video distribution division keep the films and DVDs."

If true, this might imply that there's some truth to the headache-causing scenario I mentioned previously, where the rights to Star Trek got chopped up, too. However, I would imagine there's got to be some sort of deal here wherein Paramount Pictures kept the rights to the films but CBS Paramount Television kept the intellectual property.

Otherwise, I don't see how any new TV product could reference the films and vice versa, at least not without some contractual shenanigans per film. (Of course, this might be why no 11th film is forthcoming, as Berman reported according to the TrekToday link.)
